Chakras and The Bible
Many topics discussed here originally come from the following article, It's Not New, It's True: Chakras and Christianity
When you react in a split second your nerve impulses move 330 to 390 ft per second bypassing the thinking process altogether. When you think your nerve impulse slows down to 70-100 ft/sec, touch is around 250 ft/sec, and pain is about 2 ft/second. Electrical impulses happen at a cellular level making up the nervous system. What we're talking about is at a cellular level, something that can't be reached but holds weight. Our nervous systems are electrical, but our endocrine systems are chemical and contain 7 major glands. Believe it or not, around each gland is located a chakra, a source of energy and light.
Before the Sanskrit word for chakra was a Hebrew word, "Shachar'it" meaning to balance or center. There is a popular morning Hebrew Shachar'it prayer. 'Shakar' means 'dawn' so the prayer is said when light first appears to seek God's light and bring balance to the day. We know that God is the Father of lights from James 1:17, and Proverbs 20:27 tells us "the spirit of man is the lamp of the Lord, searching all the innermost parts of his being." When pure light is refracted we get color seen in rainbows, the sunrise, and sunset. Each chakra represents a different color creating subconscious, or conscious, reactions on a cellular level. Examples of energy come from the first chapter of Genesis. God created energy and in verse 2 the spirit of God was hovering over the face of the water. Then God said, "Let there be light," the Hebrew word for 'said' here is actually 'Amar' which means said or think. Before there was language there was the spirit and there was light. The essence of chakras.
Before we get in too deep I think it's fair to say there are a surprising amount of connections between the Hindu concept of chakras and Christianity, but then again we're all connected and are pulling from the same source, interpreting it to our best ability. You cannot find electricity, hormones, viruses, or the Holy Trinity in the Bible so I find no reason why chakras cannot be legitimate simply because they were never mentioned. How Christians ought to approach chakras, however, is a different story.
Chakras were first recorded in Hindu scriptures and taught to start work at the root chakra working energy up the body through the power of the Kundalini Spirit. This spirit is an ancient description for the divine feminine energy that awakens the body and is translated to a serpent or snake-like energy winding up our spines.
If you're a Christian, breathe for a second, you're not contacting any bad spirits by getting educated. There are plenty of rumors suggesting satanic practices in regards to anything eastern-medicine from our crowd and I would like to ask where your intention lies. Because if you are open to anything and everything, that is what you will often receive, but if you stay open and on guard, you will know you are protected and led by the Lord. We can learn from each other, we can benefit from understanding our commonalities, all of us.
The root chakra is said to keep you anchored to the physical world and is responsible for your basic security. It makes total sense that most people would think to start here and work your way up to become divine through your own effort. However, the Christian knows they can only find their security through God:
Ephesians 3:17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love,
Colossians 2:7 rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
Revelation 22:16 “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.”
The chakras are measured 1-7 from the crown chakra to the root chakra. As believers, we're taught to be grounded in love instead of the physical world. To be rooted in love we must be strengthened by His Spirit in our own spirit and soul. If we start at the 1st chakra instead of the 7th, the Crown Chakra responsible for wisdom and enlightenment, we'll be scripturally correct. The crown chakra symbolizes "the seat/throne of God" and connects you to your divine self, your spirit and sense of godliness. This is where we feel the presence of God strongest.
2 Peter 1:3 His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence,
Acts 17:28-29 for “‘In him we live and move and have our being’; as even some of your own poets have said, “‘For we are indeed his offspring.’ Being then God's offspring, we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of man.
Romans 1:20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
God is within you and speaks through you. While tying into the 1st commandment, "you shall have no other gods" starting at the crown chakra helps us solidify that we are connecting to one clear source.
When we do not know, God breathes through us,
Romans 2:14 For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law.
However, this only works if we're aligned and listening! A closed heart and mind do nothing positive for the soul. James 4:2 says, "You do not have, because you do not ask." Divine guidance must be requested and willing to receive, then he will guide our spirits in all that we do.
John 15:26 "But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me." - Jesus
John 16:33 "I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” - Jesus
Religion simply helps us connect to our spirituality. If you are Christian, by nature you believe we are spiritual beings created to be lights of that spirit. There are of course other parameters, such as accepting Jesus as your savior and so on, but if you think of chakras as 'body medicine' similar to the concept of acupuncture, it's using body energy for healing. It's opening the heart and helping ourselves so that we're available for God to help us. It's connecting to our spirituality, our natural energy.
Random but Relevant
John 19:1-2 Then Pilate took Jesus and flogged him. And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head and arrayed him in a purple robe.
The Crown Chakra's color is violet or purple and is located just above the head. It's only fitting that Jesus himself wore this suit the night he died for us all.
2 Corinthians 11:14 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.
A reminder to always be intentional and aware, living in constant communication with God keeps your mind focused and not easily deceived.
The 7 chakras are located around our 7 glands further playing a major role in our hormone secretion and production. Each gland communicates with different parts of the body and control how we feel, sleep, and live. These are vital to keep us in balance and solidify the concept of aligning within.
If nothing else, I hope your understanding of energy, spirituality, and Christianity has evolved. We grow by helping each other grow and by having these fruitful discussions. Thank you for spending your time here.
All my love,
